Inspired by one of Melbourne’s most popular seaside locales, our Portsea collection represents our take on the modern marine timepiece style. Traditionally characterised by clean white dials with roman numerals, watches of this design style were often used by officers in the navy or on merchant vessels at the end of the 19th century (first as pocket watches and then as wrist watches in the early 20th century).
Originally released in 2014, our Portsea Calendar model is powered by the Miyota Calibre 9122 automatic ‘triple calendar’ self-winding mechanical movement, made in Japan. The 9000 series of movements are part of Miyota’s premium 26 jewel mechanical range with a higher beat rate of 28,800bph, allowing for a smoother glide of the second hand around the dial. The Calibre 9122 has a maximum power reserve of 40 hours when fully wound.
With the dial itself, we wanted to do something different in terms of materials and construction and decided to explore the use of ceramic to give the Portsea a unique look. As opposed to most watch dials that use ceramics, the main dial layer is a thick moulded ceramic disc, rather than a brass dial with ceramic coating. This initially proved challenging (particularly with regards to ‘drop testing’) but after more than 6 months of prototyping we arrived at the dial in its current form.
In 2015, we released a second version of the Portsea, known as the ‘Heritage’ collection. The Portsea Heritage was designed as a ‘simpler’ version of the original collection with a classic 3-hand and date dial configuration. The Heritage collection shares the same case and dial construction but is powered by the Seiko Calibre NH35 self-winding mechanical movement.
The Portsea collection is available in a range of colour combinations, with the next release scheduled for April 14 th 2017. For a limited time, you can pre-order yours and save 25% off our retail pricing.
